Multi-Sensory Therapy (Trilogy)

Trilogy Sensory Program

For over a decade at Sibley Eye Care, Sensory Learning has helped children and adults by addressing learning problems associated with developmental delays, acquired brain injury symptoms or disorders affecting sensory functions. The Trilogy Program relies on the fact that sensory perception is the foundation for our understanding of the world and the people around us. Academic abilities, behavior, coordination, motor control and emotional growth all rest upon essential sensorimotor organization.

Our Trilogy Program is designed to help improve the brain’s multisensory processing. Multisensory processing is the ability to filter, modulate and integrate all the senses our brain receives from the environment. It helps give us the ability to pay attention to what is important and filter out what is not necessary. Based on the principles of Mary Bolles’ Sensory Learning Program model, this program incorporates vision, proprioception, and auditory stimulation to help re-train the brain. The process of stimulating these senses at once helps to open the pathways and communication between these areas in the brain and also helps to balance our body’s nervous system.

Who Would It Benefit?

Because this program is so gentle, it’s helped patients as young as a few months old and as old as their 90s, making it a great option for people of all ages. There is no wrong person for the program as anyone can choose to enhance their brain function. This sensorimotor integration technique has helped many individuals who report the following conditions:

  • Learning/reading problems

  • Autism

  • Acquired brain injury/Concussion

  • Trauma/PTSD

  • Sensory integration dysfunction

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Developmental delays

  • Anxiety/depression

  • Balance/coordination issues

  • Vision issues (unrelated to glasses)

  • Concentration/retention of information

How Does It Work?

The Trilogy Program is a 30-day program. The first 12 consecutive days consist of an hour-long session that happens in the office. Each session builds on the previous session’s progress. Because of this, it is important to attend each session without interruption or break in sequence. During the session, the patient’s visual system is stimulated with a sequence of colors of light which change throughout the 12 days. The patient is comfortably positioned to be able to lie down in a reclined position on the trochoidal motion chair. This apparatus moves in a slow clockwise/counter clockwise elliptical motion activating the body’s vestibular system. Meanwhile the auditory stimulation comes in the form of music. Headphones are worn as the patient listens to music tracks that vary greatly in tempo, rhythm, and volume. The emphasis is placed on the right side to enhance right ear dominance.

On the last day of in-office treatment, the patient is sent home with a light device to continue the light therapy for an additional 18 days. The requirement at home is two 20-minute sessions completed morning and evening.

Once the 30 days are completed, patients will return to the clinic for a follow up appointment to assess progress and plan for the future. An additional follow up appointment is set at 90 days.
